Am I Significant?

By Mary Beth Walker

Sleepless nights are the worst.

Last night my sleep was interrupted by a child who could not sleep.  After tossing and turning for what seemed like hours, I gave up and got up (3 am is not for the weary.)  During this forced period of insomnia, my mind began to wander and ponder about life's most pressing questions like, "What age should girls start wearing makeup?" or "How can I eat a gluten-free, dairy-free diet?" and finally, "Am I doing anything significant with my life?"  Ouch.  That was a tough one.

That question got me thinking about REFIT® and the community of instructors and participants we've had the honor of meeting over the past few years.  Without a doubt, one of the most common stories we hear from women describes how they "lost themselves" in the midst of motherhood, care-taking, health issues, career changes, financial hardships, mental breakdowns, etc.

As a mother of three girls and a former stay-at-home-mom for over a decade, I can identify with this story deep in my bones.  It wasn't that long ago that I was in the same shoes as many of these story tellers.  It wasn't that long ago that I couldn't identify myself as anything other than "mom."  It wasn't that long ago that my health was buried somewhere underneath a pile of laundry and a trash can full of dirty diapers.  I get it with my whole heart.

Most of us are looking for ways to make a difference within our daily lives but finding the opportunity is hard. It's one of the many reasons why I love REFIT.

REFIT begins a journey of "self re-discovery" that becomes a catalyst for change.

During our live REFIT events, I typically start the class by asking participants to give themselves "permission to be here."  It may sound like a strange request, but it's an important one.  People often live life under the yoke of what they "should be" or "shouldn't be" doing, and granting permission for certain activities or indulgences is liberating and powerful.

The formula is pretty simple:  when women take time to invest in themselves -- whether it's a spa day, lunch with friends, a bubble bath or REFIT -- they change for the better.  They become better moms, better friends, better employees, better wives...they become better at life.

This self-investment is significant.  It's powerful.  It makes a difference.  It creates impact.

So, if you're like me and you come face to face with another sleepless night that's filled with the questions of life, start by answering this one:  "how did I invest in myself today?"

And if you're looking for an answer, might we suggest REFIT?  ;)

Sleep tight,

I liked that question u asked in 9th standard! and that article gives an interesting response to it as well… I enjoyed reading it! As for the 50-rupee note issue, I agree. These days everyone seems to be wanting change rather than giving it out. We desperately need more!!! I second you!

, "A key that can open many locks is a valuable key, but a lock that can be opened by many keys is a useless lock."The big irony is that 'feminism', rather than improving the lives of women, has stripped away the safety nets of mother/grandmother guidance that would have shielded her from ever having to face her Wile E. Coyote moment. 'Feminism' has thus put the average woman at risk in yet another area.

This is what I struggle with as a mom EVERYDAY! Before my second child I was a Turbo Kick instructor, eating healthy and balancing life. I felt joy and comfort in my own skin. I looked forward to going out for social events and felt like I could conquer the world. Well, not so much anymore. Now I am all in with being a full time mom of two and part to full time dental hygienist with chronic pain. My health has taken a back seat. I am up all hours of the night cleaning, organizing, packing lunches etc. Then getting up early and getting kids off to school and having my tank running on empty by the time I get to work. It takes everything for me to be the person I want to be at home and work. I am on tons of meds that make me so tired on top of that. My youngest just told me mommy your belly is big. I wanted to cry. I have to do SOMETHING and invest in ME!!!! I want health and longevity for my family as well as myself!!! Being a great example to my children is so important to me and I feel like I am failing at that now. Things are going to change! My 9 year old and I made a magnet board of the progress we are making with Refit. Keeping track of the days we work out. She loves the music!! its so nice not to have to worry about her hearing inappropriate lyrics and messages. Thank you for this article. Sometimes I just thought it was me being lazy or just trying to find another excuse. It is encouraging knowing someone as power packed and motivated in Christ was at the same point.

You girls inspire me! As a mom of 4 I have a hard time finding "me" time. DH has encouraged me to exercise, but it has just felt like another chore to check off my list, until I rediscovered the joy of dance fitness with you gals, thanks to the Internet. Now I can look forward to my workout, and instead of thinking "am I done yet?" I think "oh, I have time for one more song." And the best part: my toddler enjoys "dance time" with me :)

thank you for this! I am going to use this tonight in my 2nd REFIT class I am teaching. I think that asking the women to "give themselves permission to be here" is very important. I plan to thank them and mention that when women invest in themselves, it creates a change for the better which trickles out to every aspect of their life. thank you!
