REAL GOALS FOR 2019

By Angela Beeler

REAL Fitness Goals for REAL People.

Maybe you’re the kind of person who approaches each new year with a sense of excitement and anticipation, but for me….it’s overwhelming.  I believe that the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, and it’s easy to focus on what I didn’t do, what I didn’t accomplish, and basically all the areas where I completely failed.  This creates a difficult challenge for setting New Year’s goals, doesn’t it?

Each year, 45% of Americans set goals for the New Year and of those who set goals, 73% of them included some type of fitness or health goal in their resolutions.  Sadly, the statistics show that only 8% of these goals will be met. Odds aren’t good, are they?

This year, I’m trying something new.  I’m creating REAL fitness goals that fit my life, not dictate my life.   You see, I’m a REAL person with a really busy schedule. I’m a mom, business owner, fitness instructor, friend, wife, and many other roles that chip away at my time.  Finding ways to fit health and fitness goals into my already-too-busy schedule is a challenge we can all understand.

I believe that we can approach 2019 with REAL goals that will set us up for success and help us beat the odds.  And I believe that this year can be the year we reflect on in future years that will help us predict better behaviors because we actually accomplish what we set out to do.

Let’s set REAL goals:

  1. REALISTIC GOALS: the first step is often the hardest step and identifying realistic goals might seem arduous at first, but the payoff is huge.  Too often we set goals that are too big or simply unreachable due to our age, health, season of life, etc. A realistic goal is something that you can achieve.  For example, setting a goal of slam dunking a basketball is not realistic.  First of all, I’m short. Secondly, I’m short. I could practice all year long and never actually reach this goal because guess what?  Shortys can’t ball.
  2. EXPLORE OPTIONS: specifically with health and fitness goals, you want to have options.  Too often we join a gym before knowing if it’s the right fit. How many of you have said, “well, if I pay for it -- I’ll use it” only to realize that your currently paying for something you don’t use?  #guilty There are endless fitness options available that can help you reach your health goals, and exploring these options will increase your chance of resolution success. The new year is the perfect time to explore these options because the fitness industry will offer deep discounts and free options. Get out there and fall in love with fitness.  Find something you actually like. (And don’t forget to find your fit at REFIT!)
  3. ACCOUNTABILITY: a huge part of achieving your fitness and health goals is establishing an accountability system or, as I like to call it, a TRIBE.  Your tribe should support and encourage your fitness goals -- not guilt or shame you into them. Your tribe members don’t necessarily have to workout with you -- they just need to encourage you in your efforts.  Have an especially helpful hubby? Sit down and talk with him about your health and fitness resolutions and how he can support you.  I bet when your next workout rolls around, he’ll make sure kids and dinner is taken care of!
  4. LET GO:  this is going to be the hardest step of all.  Letting go is an important part of this journey for 2019.  Letting go of expectations. Letting go of control. Letting go of past failures.  Letting go of negative thought patterns. We clench our fingers around these things and it’s often a huge obstacle in our path.  Listen ladies, the best thing about the new year is that we get to wipe the slate clean and start over. One thing I love about REFIT® is the way we embrace the journey.  We’ve seen thousands of people completely transform their lives because they gave themselves permission to fail...and start again. I’m encouraging you to do the same. Let go...and LET’S GO, 2019.

My final piece of advice for your 2019 health and fitness goals is to set your goals for the first 90 days.  We live in a constantly changing culture, and I believe that goals should be re-evaluated and revised every 90 days to reflect to our dynamic lives.

Thank you for sharing this with us! My husband and I were just discussing goals for the new year and I am pretty much the worst at goal setting, but definitely going to give this a try!
