Freedom Journey Day 1: FEAR

By Angela Beeler

Today we're going to attack our Freedom Journey head on...in a place it matters most:  YOUR MIND.  The way we think and behave is directly related to what's happening in our minds, and a big struggle for many women is over the issue of FEAR.

Fear is a powerful form of kryptonite to even the strongest superheroes because it paralyzes and creates doubt.  Many of you have probably spent a decent amount of time mustering up the courage to face your fears, running from it or ignoring it.

Fear is also a master of deceit, and it can often look like wisdom, protection and strong decision making.

Here are some common examples of fear and some associated behaviors:

  1. Fear of death.  Can manifest as overprotection.  "Needy" relationships.  Control.
  2. Terminal illness.  Can manifest as obsessive health focus, such as hypochondria or extreme food restrictions.
  3. Fear of failure.  Can manifest as perfectionism or risk-aversion.
  4. Loneliness.  Can manifest as poor relationship choices.  Isolation.  Over-attached personality.
  5. Fear of change.  Can manifest as.  Inability to make decisions.  Anger/Anxiety.
  6. Fear of emotions.  Can manifest as emotional neutrality.  Deadening desire.  Misplaced passion.
  7. Fear of rejection.  Can manifest isolation.  Lack of vulnerability or punitive behavior.

Did any of these resonate with you?  If so, how?

Angela, Catherine & Emily discuss their personal fears here:

I can totally relate! Just finished this book called "Unafraid" and it was a game-changer for me. http://www.amazon.com/Unafraid-Trusting-God-Unsafe-World/dp/1601426399

I recently realized that fear is the reason I had quit trusting God in many ways. The truth is, horrible things do happen, all the time, and we have to somehow believe that God is still good. I can make up a hundred terrible scenarios in seconds involving my kids, family, health, etc., but is that actually going to protect them? Nope. And it makes me crazy and tired. So when the scary train in my brain starts running away, I am fighting back with Prov. 31:25 and Ps. 119:68. God IS good!!

Thanks so much for your response, Angela. I have a daughter who is half Asian so she can probably relate to you on some levels. I am looking forward to this freedom journey.....it is just a shame that you are in Texas and I am in California. I would love to meet people as inspiring to the community as you are. I feel that is the missing element in my area.

Try some fear replacement: each time you think about a fear, immediately replace it with a truth or an positive thought. Sounds simple, but it's helpful in the moment.

I would definitely think that falls under the failure category: failure to get it right, get it perfect, etc.! Way to identify that!

Thanks for the birthday wishes! My (asian) mom was also performance driven and didn't like my "failures" -- but I knew she loved me and wanted my best!

We pray that for you, too!

Not a deep one here, but it changes my behavior....I am really really afraid of snakes, and I have not run in 2 weeks because on my last run, I encountered a snake! With all the rain we have had, they are out there. BUT you're right, every time I have seen a snake, I have survived!

Fear of rejection has always been an issue with me. After some major injuries, weight gain from medication has led to me making myself more less likely to attend anything. I don't want to go out. I've lost 20+ but still shy away from many things.

you are not alone....I hear ya! I deal with all of this too.....depression, fear of finances, fear of not being good enough for my kids, husband, family, work.....it's neverending! These negative thoughts are almost paralyzing sometimes. So recently my prayer has been a cry out to God to make me content with who I am and what I have. Restore the joy of my salvation to me! And guess what?! He has done this! So right now, I'm gonna pray this over you as well. Just wanted you to know you are not alone {{{HUGS}}}

I actually arrived late on looking at my email, but I did want to give it a good go at it. I couldn't find the question on facebook, because I wasn't approved yet. Well here it goes I want to share my fear of dieing. I don't know what it is but I start to think about it and I get this sick anxiety feeling. Then I have to make my mind think of other things so the feeling will go away. Why am I scared I guess it is not being here for my Daughter and two Grandbabies or it could be not be here at all. I would love to conquer this, I just do not know how!

I see a lot of comments about fear of failure. Is fear of making a mistake the same thing as failure? It probably is. Fear of making mistakes at work is a big one for me.

Amen to the snakes :). Since moving to Waco, I feel like all I do is look for snakes/ask people if they have snakes at their houses!

I have fear of failure. It is something that has been with me since childhood, mostly from the way my parents have shun failing. This video really helped me understand where fear comes from. Thanks and by the way, I just finished watching the 90 minute birthday celebration. HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, ANGELA!! I appreciate you guys continuing to share your wisdom with the rest of the world who may be not be able to be in your live classes.

Good stuff!!!! I grew up seeing my Mom deal with depression that was created from fear. So as a young adult I prayed for the release of any fear In my life and I did quite well until about my mid 30's. The past year or so Satan as been putting fear in my life. In the shape of fear of failure, fear of acceptance of my family from my family, fear of not having enough money just to name a few. I pray this study group helps me find the way to break through these chains in Jesus name!

SUCH GREAT STUFF! The kinda stuff that one can sink her teeth into. Like steak. But, I don't eat steak, anymore. Still, this is great steak-like stuff...without the cholesterol. ;)
