Sleepless nights are the worst.
Last night my sleep was interrupted by a child who could not sleep. After tossing and turning for what seemed like hours, I gave up and got up (3 am is not for the weary.) During this forced period of insomnia, my mind began to wander and ponder about life's most pressing questions like, "What age should girls start wearing makeup?" or "How can I eat a gluten-free, dairy-free diet?" and finally, "Am I doing anything significant with my life?" Ouch. That was a tough one.
That question got me thinking about REFIT® and the community of instructors and participants we've had the honor of meeting over the past few years. Without a doubt, one of the most common stories we hear from women describes how they "lost themselves" in the midst of motherhood, care-taking, health issues, career changes, financial hardships, mental breakdowns, etc.
As a mother of three girls and a former stay-at-home-mom for over a decade, I can identify with this story deep in my bones. It wasn't that long ago that I was in the same shoes as many of these story tellers. It wasn't that long ago that I couldn't identify myself as anything other than "mom." It wasn't that long ago that my health was buried somewhere underneath a pile of laundry and a trash can full of dirty diapers. I get it with my whole heart.
Most of us are looking for ways to make a difference within our daily lives but finding the opportunity is hard. It's one of the many reasons why I love REFIT.
REFIT begins a journey of "self re-discovery" that becomes a catalyst for change.
During our live REFIT events, I typically start the class by asking participants to give themselves "permission to be here." It may sound like a strange request, but it's an important one. People often live life under the yoke of what they "should be" or "shouldn't be" doing, and granting permission for certain activities or indulgences is liberating and powerful.
The formula is pretty simple: when women take time to invest in themselves -- whether it's a spa day, lunch with friends, a bubble bath or REFIT -- they change for the better. They become better moms, better friends, better employees, better wives...they become better at life.
This self-investment is significant. It's powerful. It makes a difference. It creates impact.
So, if you're like me and you come face to face with another sleepless night that's filled with the questions of life, start by answering this one: "how did I invest in myself today?"
And if you're looking for an answer, might we suggest REFIT? ;)
Sleep tight,
